The University of Findlay indoor track and field teams got their January schedule off to a solid start with a number of first-place finishes at Saturday’s Tiffin University Dragon Open.
The Oilers’ George Effah was a double winner in the men’s meet as he won the 200-meter dash with a Great Midwest Athletic Conference record time of 22.3. He also teamed with Kurt Grieger, Lenell Shelby III and Jay Williams for a GMAC record in the 1,600 relay (3:24.49).
Jonathan Allen won the 3,000 (9:03.43) and Daniel Agbola captured the 800 (2:01.47).
In the field events, Austin Combs (Liberty-Benton) set a conference mark by winning the weight throw (67-1½) while Martin Etsey won the triple jump with a GMAC record lead of 49-9.
Trey Everett added a victory in the long jump with a GMAC record leap of 22-9¼.
In the women’s meet, Milani Glass and Jenna Shipman were a double winners for the Oilers.
Glass won the 60 hurdles (8.76) and teamed with Shipman, Aubreah Manns (Riverdale) and Semoy Hemmings to win the 1,600 relay (4:07.41). Shipman added an individual win in the 400 (1:00.37).
Alex Devincentis (Liberty-Benton) set a conference mark in winning the shot put (49-5½).
Wrestling falls to Mercyhurst
The University of Findlay wrestling team’s struggles continued as the Roughnecks won just three matches in Saturday’s 27-12 dual meet loss to Mercyhurst at Croy Gymnasium.
Senior Brad Metz picked up his 101st career victory for UF with a win by fall over Mercyhurst’s Zach Breeden at 184 pounds.
UF’s James Wimer knocked off Owen Watkins 9-8 at 157 pounds. Mimmo Lytle beat Jacob Robb 6-2 at 285 pounds for the Roughnecks’ only other victory.

Swimming sweeps Bellarmine
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Six different members of the University of Findlay swimming team were multi-event winners as the Oilers swept Bellarmine University in a dual meet Saturday in Louisville, Kentucky.
The women’s team dominated 166-92 while the men prevailed 135-124.
Amanda Stiegel won the 50-yard free (25.00), the 200 free (1:57.55) and the 500 free (5:24.99) and later teamed with Hanna Cederholm, Lauren Blanchard and Julia Snell to win the 200 free relay.
Cederholm swept the individual breaststroke races. She won the 100 in 1:05.99 and the 200 in 2:22.74.
Cederholm also combined with Kathryn Samuelson (Ottawa-Glandorf), Katy Kouvaris and Blanchard to win the 400 medley relay (3:59.79). Samuelson added a win in the 100 backstroke (1:00.51).
On the men’s side, Conner Whitaker and Trent Williams each had an individual and a team win.
Whitaker won the 50 free (22.29), Williams took the 100 butterfly (52.99) and both joined Isaac Stretch and Nathan Bourne in winning the 200 free relay.
