FSW women cruise past Nova SE behind Big Three

LAKELAND — Florida Southern women's basketball coach Betsy Harris likes to call them her "Big Three."

She's referring to Anja Fuchs-Robetin, Camille Giardina and Jensen Blassage. The trio combined for 84 points to power Florida Southern to a 94-76 win over Nova Southeastern here Saturday night at Jenkins Field House.

"They're a special group," Harris said.

Fuchs-Robetin led the Mocs with 33 points, the most for a Florida Southern player since Jan. 27, 2010 when Michaela Hawley scored 38 against Nova.

Giardina netted 31 points coming off the bench for the first time this season due to a left foot injury.

Blassage chipped in with 20.

With the win, the Mocs, who have now won seven straight, improved their Sunshine State Conference-leading record to 9-2 and overall mark to 14-3. Nova, which never led in the game, fell to 5-6 in the SSC, 9-8 overall.

Giardina scored 14 of her 31 ponts in the second quarter, when the Mocs turned a 21-15 lead to 45-31 at the half. Eighteen of Fuchs-Robetin's 33 came in the third quarter.

Nova closed the gap to 63-57 at the end of the third quarter, but the Mocs went on a 12-2 run at the outset of the fourth to build a 75-59 lead. Nova never threatened after that.

Giardina, who played in pain, will have an MRI done on her left foot at the end of the season.

"It was different (coming off the bench," said Giardina, "I had to find my flow, but the team executed and we were knocking down our shots."

"We needed some scoring coming off the bench," Harris said. "Camille provided us with that. She's been playing all season with that foot injury. She responded well."

The Mocs shot a season-high 53.2 percent from the floor, including 9-of-19 from the 3-point line.

Fuchs-Robetin led the shooting attack, hitting on 12-of-17 shots from the floor. Giardina's shot 9-for-18 with five 3-pointers and Blassage nailed 8-of-14.

"We have a nice streak going," Fuchs-Robetin said. "Our first goal is to win the conference championship. If we do that, we can take it from there."

Alison Hughes led Nova with 21 points, while Christen Prasse netted 18.

Florida Southern's next game is Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. at Jenkins Field House against St. Leo, a team the Mocs defeated earlier this season, 75-60. That will be followed by a road game Saturday at Palm Beach Atlantic.
