FRI conducts training programme on Seed Technology

A training programme on seed technology for the personnel of Uttar Pradesh and Haryana State forest departments began at the Forest Research Institute (FRI) here on Sunday.

 Speaking at the inauguration of the programme organised by the silviculture division of FRI, the institute director Savita said that the seed is an integral part of any plantation programme and should be given due importance as though such training programmes on seed technology.

The Uttar Pradesh principal chief conservator of forests, Pawan Kumar appreciated the institute for organising the seed training on his department’s request. He also stressed on the importance of seed as a component of forestry. The FRI silviculture division head Arti Chaudhury also shared her views on the training course. Earlier, the course coordinator Ombir Singh gave a detailed report of the course and said that more emphasis is being laid on practical exposure in seed laboratory.

Scientist Manisha Thapliyal also spoke about different aspects of seed technology and tissue culture included in this course. The training module includes the techniques of seed collection, handling, processing, dormancy pretreatments, seed storage, seed testing, seed certification and quality seed production of forestry species along with tissue culture.

According to FRI officials, about 25 participants of Uttar Pradesh and Haryana State Forest Departments are participating in the training programme.
