SAN JOSE — A man was found shot to death outside an upscale apartment complex off Cottle Road on Sunday night, marking the city’s second homicide of the year, according to San Jose police.
Dispatchers got multiple calls around 8:48 p.m. reporting gunshots in the 5000 block of Charlotte Drive, in front of the Ascent Apartments, police said. The complex is adjacent to the Village Oaks Shopping Center, which was built in recent years and subsequently surrounded by several new housing developments.
Responding officers found an adult male victim suffering from at least one gunshot wound, Officer Gina Tepoorten said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police did not immediately release any motive or suspect information, but a source familiar with the investigation said witnesses saw a male suspect running from the scene.
No other victims were involved in the shooting, police said.
At the same point last year, San Jose had recorded three homicides on the way to a total of 34 in 2017. The year before, the city recorded 47 homicides, which marked a 25-year high.
