Stanford’s Keller Chryst to leave as a graduate transfer
Keller Chryst, Stanford’s starting quarterback for seven games last season before being replaced by redshirt freshman K.J. Costello, will play elsewhere next fall as a graduate transfer.
Chryst made the announcement on Twitter but did not say where he was headed. He played three seasons at Stanford after redshirting in 2014. The science, technology and society major will graduate in June and will be eligible to play immediately at his next school.
The son of Denver Broncos tight ends coach Geep Chryst, he passed for 7,326 yards and 85 touchdowns for Palo Alto High School, across the street from Stanford Stadium.
Chryst played 23 games in three seasons at Stanford, going 6-0 as a starter in 2016. In his career, he completed 55 percent of his passes for 1,926 yards, with 19 touchdowns and six interceptions.
Chryst started the first four games in 2017 but was injured early in the fourth game, against UCLA. Costello started against Arizona State in Week 5, but Chryst started the next three games, sharing the duties with Costello against Utah and Oregon. Costello took the job for good against Washington State in Stanford’s ninth game.
Redshirt freshman Davis Mills is expected to open next season as the backup to Costello, with Jack West entering as a freshman. Ryan Burns, the only other scholarship quarterback on the roster last season, was a fifth-year senior.
USA Today national college columnist Dan Wolken said in a tweet that Tennessee is a possible destination for Chryst.
