The Giants could officially have a new head coach on Monday.
It was reported last week that Vikings offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur would become the new Giants' coach. But the Giants couldn't officially make the hire until the Vikings' playoff run ended. That happened in Sunday's 38-7 loss to the Eagles in the NFC Championship Game.
The Giants are expected to meet with Shurmur for a second interview, possibly as early as Monday, to finalize the agreement. Shurmur met with Giants co-owner John Mara, general manager Dave Gettleman and assistant general manager Kevin Abrams in Bloomfield, Minnesota, on Jan. 6 during the Vikings' first-round bye.
Co-owner Steve Tisch didn't attend that interview, but he had an hour-long phone conversation with Shurmur after the rest of the Giants' contingent met with the 52-year-old, according to a person familiar with the situation.
The Giants will likely move quickly to hire Shurmur so he can attend the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama, this week to scout prospects alongside Gettleman. The first practice for the all-star game is scheduled for Tuesday afternoon. The Giants have the second pick in the upcoming draft.
Shurmur surely had been assembling a coaching staff behind the scenes as he prepared for his second head-coaching job. Former Raiders head coach Jack Del Rio is reportedly the favorite to be named defensive coordinator and former Panthers special teams coordinator Thomas McGaughey reportedly will be hired for the same role with the Giants.
Shurmur went 9-23 in two seasons as the Browns' head coach from 2011-12. He was the Eagles' offensive coordinator from 2013-15 before joining the Vikings' staff in 2016.
Shurmur's tenure in Minnesota ended on a sour note, as the Vikings were dominated in Sunday's loss to the Eagles. The Vikings were shut-out after scoring on their opening possession.
