The summer holidays are a great time to unwind and relax after a long work year - especially if you have just quit your job after dreaming of it ‘for a long time.’

In a telling interview with Woman’s Day, Mike Hosking’s wife of six years, broadcaster Kate Hawkesby opened up about her husband’s former job.

“If we’re honest, he was desperate to get out of there for a long time.”

Hosking made his tearful farewell on Seven Sharp late last year - a move that was surprising to viewers but not to Kate.

After announcing the move in December, Hosking has spent the summer break relaxing and planning the year ahead, both here in NZ and on holiday in Los Angeles.

Hawkesby says their five children have enjoyed having Mike’s company in the evenings again and have been loving the family time they missed out on when he hosted the nightly show.

“Like going for walks and the family eating dinner together.”

Less enjoyable is the couple’s brutal 3am wake up call, with Kate returning to work this year, joining Newstalk ZB.

“Our schedules will be in sync now, which will be good” says Kate.

Kate hosts Early Edition from 5am each weekday, ahead of the Mike Hosking Breakfast on Newstalk ZB, weekdays from 6am.
