We have just honored the life of one of this country’s’ greatest men, Martin Luther King Jr. In doing so, we must acknowledge that his dream remains unrealized, remains just a dream. And why is that?
It is because men like Brian Mast prefer to be seen as doing, rather than actually doing, the hard work of leadership. Men like him don’t deserve the trappings of their office.
Men like Mast toss sentimentality into the wind and believe it makes a difference.
Men like Mast quote men like MLK, whose memory they are not fit to recall, while at the same time remaining silent against the racial terrorism that continues to haunt millions of American people.
Men like Mast, who have known vast privilege and vast loss fighting for the American Dream, belittle the strongest among us as they kneel in silent protest so perhaps -- just maybe -- the dim light of a dream may glow all the more brightly.
Men like Mast are beholden to all that men like MLK died trying to eradicate.
Men like Mast are not worthy of King’s words.
