Several wrecks across the city have left three motorists dead and multiple others hospitalized, according to San Antonio police.

Officers say a driver was traveling west along the 8500 block of N. Loop 1604 near Hausman Road just after 9 p.m., Saturday, when he was involved in a minor accident, which he attempted to flee.

While speeding away the driver left the roadway and drove up onto the median where he struck a light pole. According to reports, after striking the pole, the vehicle careened into and beneath a piece of construction equipment. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. No one else was injured.

Across town on the South Side, in the 2800 block of Roosevelt Avenue, about 2:04 a.m., Sunday, police report the driver of a silver Nissan Versa was traveling north at a high rate of speed when he veered into oncoming traffic and struck another vehicle head-on.

The driver of the Nissan was not wearing a seatbelt, according to police reports, and died at the scene. The three occupants of the other vehicle were taken to University Hospital in serious condition, according to police at the scene.

Shortly after at about 2:15 a.m., on the Northeast Side in the 2600 Harry Wurzbach Road, Doris Dimas Windom, 34, drove into the oncoming lanes of the road and struck a utility pole, according to police.

Officers say Windom was not wearing a seatbelt and was pronounced dead at the scene. Four other occupants of the vehicle were transported to University Hospital with injuries that were not life threatening.

Police say they discovered several empty open containers of alcohol in the vehicle and that the passengers told officers the group had just left a bar.
