CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Within a packed field featuring many proven state qualifiers and athletes from 16 schools, Ben Turnbough stood out once again.
The Potosi senior extended his unbeaten record for the season, and was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler on Saturday at the annual SEMO conference tournament.
Turnbough competed six times during the two-day event, and captured the 195-pound division title with a 15-2 major decision over Sikeston’s Landan Griggs.
The reigning state runner-up in Class 2 surrendered four combined points through his first four bouts – each of which ended on technical falls – and improved to 31-0 overall.
Jackson claimed the team championship for a second straight year by a substantial margin of 337-252 over nearest challenger Ste. Genevieve.
The Dragons celebrated three individual bracket winners, however, as Isaac Boyd (285), Jared Humbolt (145) and Jacob Dickens (106) headlined the podium.
Boyd (28-5) built his own case for an award by pinning all five of his heavyweight opponents, including a third-period triumph over Joe Becker of Hillsboro in the final.
Humbolt (38-4) topped Grant Pauli of Windsor 5-4 for a sudden victory in their title clash. Dickens (33-7) closed with a 4-0 decision after needing only 11 seconds to win his quarterfinal.
Grant Staffen claimed third place at 132 pounds as four falls contributed to a 5-1 showing. Noah Ogden, Tyler Hale and Tyler Jenkins each finished fourth for Ste. Genevieve.
Windsor wound up third among teams, but boasted the highest number of bracket champions with four (Ryan Yarnell, Connor Richey, Jacob Warren, Andrew Kinder).
Ian Asher (138) and Dylan Allen (170) swept through their respective competition, while Kyle Crawford (113) and Dalton Berg (220) reached finals to help Farmington grab fifth place overall.
Three falls spurred Asher toward a championship battle with Bradon Vaugier of Jackson, who suffered only his fifth defeat this season as Asher prevailed 9-8.
Allen (41-4) added another title to his strong senior season after pinning David Hill of Kennett at 3:03, and went 5-0 in the tournament to match Asher.
Crawford advanced through the semifinal round with a 9-0 major decision before falling in dominant fashion to Alec Bailey of Jackson. Berg secured three falls along his path.
North County senior Mike Allison (26-3) starred at 220 pounds by going 4-0 with three falls, and covered Berg during the second period of the championship bout.
Cody White, Kyle Cresswell and Cole Cresswell each placed fourth for the Raiders. Kyle Cresswell pinned four separate foes.
Potosi junior Noah Juliette and Central freshman Kade Willis dueled through six minutes of scoreless regulation in the third-place match at 126 pounds.
Juliette executed the winning takedown for a 2-0 sudden victory to finish 5-1 in the tournament. Willis had previously notched four pins within the bracket.
Central and Valle Catholic each entered only three wrestlers into the event.
