Dickman leads BSU to 4-1 win

BIG RAPIDS, Mich.—Jay Dickman bagged a pair of goals to help the Bemidji State men's hockey team skate to a 4-1 win Saturday night, Jan. 20, over Ferris State at Ewigleben Ice Arena.

The victory is the eighth straight in Western Collegiate Hockey Association play for the Beavers (13-7-6, 10-4-4-2 WCHA), who are unbeaten in their last 11 league games.

Charlie Combs and Adam Brady picked up three points apiece on the night. Combs scored an empty-net goal near the end of the game in addition to assisting on two other goals, while Brady earned three helpers in the game.

Despite the final score, the game was actually tied at 1-1 entering the final minute of the second period.

The Bulldogs (10-17-1, 7-12-1-0 WCHA) struck first when Lucas Finner scored the opening goal at 6:22 of the first period.

Five minutes later, Hampus Sjodahl scored from nearly parallel to the goal line on his tight-angle shot that evened the score at 1-1.

The score held at 1-all for the next 27 minutes, until a hooking call on Jasen Fernsler gave the Beavers a chance to pull ahead in the closing minutes of the second period.

On the power play, Dickman tipped in Brady's shot with 35 seconds left in the period to move BSU ahead 2-1 on the eventual game-winning goal.

Dickman buried his team-leading 13th goal of the season on another power play at 13:07 of the third to give the Beavers some breathing room. The goal came as a result of a five-minute power play after Mitch Maloney was called for checking from behind and was issued a game misconduct. The BSU power-play unit is firing at a 23.47-percent clip, the eighth-most efficient in NCAA Division I.

Combs iced the game with 82 seconds left with his empty-netter that secured the 4-1 win.

Michael Bitzer made 19 saves in net for Bemidji State to improve to 13-6-6. Justin Kapelmaster stopped 26 shots in the loss for Ferris State.

The nation's second-leading penalty kill unit kept FSU to an 0-for-5 night on the power play.

The streaking Beavers have not dropped a game in the WCHA since a 3-1 loss Dec. 1 at Bowling Green. They will look to extend the streak in next weekend's WCHA series at Alabama Huntsville at the Von Braun Center Jan. 26-27.
