The chaos reported near Awami League President Sheikh Hasina’s Dhanmondi political office last night has been described as “jubilant celebration” of party activists by its General Secretary Obaidul Quader.
“It was not a protest rally, rather a jubilant one brought by former Chhatra League leaders based on assurance to be included in the sub-committees,” Quader said while talking to reports this noon.
Reportedly, over a hundred former Chhatra League leaders activists kept Quader confined inside the office for half an hour last night. Quader, later, announced postponing the formation of party’s sub-committees.
Quader today termed newspaper reports, that said it was a ruckus of protest, “untrue” and said he was “hurt” by the publication of such reports.
Last week, the names of members of the sub-committees came to the public domain through social media.
The names of the post holders were published on Awami League's official pad with signature of its Office Secretary Abdus Sobhan Golap.
Some ex-BCL leaders expressed dissatisfaction, alleging that some former leaders and activists of Chhatra Dal, pro-BNP student body, managed to sneak into the AL sub-committees by hiding their identities.
According to witnesses, Quader was discussing about district committee with some other senior leaders on the first floor of the new building of the party president's Dhanmondi office around 6:00pm yesterday.
At that time, some former BCL leaders, who are deprived of post, started demonstration in front of the room.
At one stage, they tried to enter the room, but it was locked from inside. Then the demonstrators chanted slogans for cancelling the committees. Later central AL leaders appeared there and brought the situation under control.
About the “announced” sub-committees, Quader yesterday said it was not any final one. “I didn’t sign the committee, as it was draft committees that were under scrutiny but somehow it was leaked.”
