A major winter storm could drop up to 18 inches of snow on southeastern South Dakota, including Yankton, Vermillion and Beresford.

Sioux Falls could receive 6-12 inches. The National Weather Service emphasized that snow totals could be dramatically different within miles of a point.

Yankton, Clay, Union and Lincoln counties are under a blizzard warning, as is northwestern Iowa and Nobles County in Minnesota. Minnehaha County is under a winter storm warning. Scroll down for watches and warnings map.

In the areas of the blizzard warning, 40 mph wind will cause whiteout conditions. Up to 18 inches of snow is possible in isolated areas.

Snow will start in eastern South Dakota around 6 p.m. Sunday evening, with heaviest rates overnight into Monday morning. The National Weather Service advises that there will be "significant impacts to travel and outdoor activities."

Expect difficult driving conditions during morning commute.

Totals could change as a shift in the storm track will cause snow amounts to change, the NWS said.
