SNOW FEAR! Queen braves freezing temps for church visit as UK hit by winter weather bomb

THE QUEEN braced Britain’s wintry conditions today as she battled falling snow on her way to church after the UK froze on the coldest night in nearly two years.

The Met Office has given a yellow warning of snow, rain and ice for this morning after overnight temperatures dropped to a chilly -13C in Scotland.

The Met Office said: “Some snow will fall on Sunday morning across parts of southeast Wales, southwest and central southern England."

London is also predicted to face snow around midday.

But the falling snow and freezing temperatures were no match for the Queen as she stepped out for a church service at St Lawrence Church, Castle Rising, Norfolk this morning.

The Queen and Prince Philip are still residing in their Sandringham estate following their Christmas break in Norfolk.

And the UK weather has failed to stop Her Majesty from attending her weekly Sunday service, as she was pictured in a knee-length emerald green coat with black fur collar trim and a matching emerald hat, teamed with black gloves.

She was also sporting a large transparent umbrella with black trim, to compliment her black shoes and handbag and protect her from the falling snowflakes.

Snow is expected to sweep across Britain today after the country was hit by the coldest night for two years.

Meteorologists say an area of snow will move eastwards across central and northern UK today warning of “slips and falls on icy surfaces”.

Wintry conditions are to continue to grip large parts of the UK on Sunday, with snow forecast for areas from northern Scotland to the Home Counties.

Temperatures plummeted overnight, with a low of -13.5C (7.7F) recorded in the Highland village of Dalwhinnie, while freezing temperatures were recorded as far south as London Luton Airport.

The Met Office has updated a yellow "be aware" warning of snow and ice to cover much of Scotland, north Wales and England down to southern parts.

The warning, valid from 6am until 6pm, predicts snow on higher routes and says that rain may fall onto frozen surfaces for a time, particularly across Scotland, following a very cold night.

Icy patches are likely on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths - while some disruption could be seen to journeys by road, bus and train on affected routes.

Traffic Scotland urged drivers to check their routes before setting off and to ensure they were carrying emergency supplies in case they get stuck.

North Wales Police also warned of poor conditions on the roads due to snow and ice, particularly on routes in Snowdonia.
