Bus fare, Share-auto fare, price hike, Bus fare in Chennai
Chennai: Taking a cue from government buses which are collecting increased fares from Saturday, share-autos in Chennai too have hiked their charges. Commuters allege that at many places, the rates have been doubled.
For instance, as against Rs 10 from St Thomas Mount railway station to Madipakkam junction, Rs 20 is now being collected per head. While the fare from Guindy to Porur has been increased from Rs 15 to Rs 20, that from Vyasarpadi to Egmore has been hiked from Rs 20 to Rs 25 and Rs 40 is being collected for Tondiarpet to High Court, as against the earlier charge of Rs 20.
"Since bus fares have gone up, I chose to take a share-auto today. But I was shocked to know their revised charges. It seems they were just waiting for a chance and the government's decision to increase bus fares was an enough opportunity for them," said Navaneethan of Perambur.
Meanwhile, with buses and share-autos increasing their fares, commuters are now preferring local and suburban train services in the city. The trains, which helped them during the recently held bus strike, have now come handy to scores of passengers once again.
"I paid just Rs five to travel from Kodambakkam to Beach station, which is unimaginable in any other mode. But reports about the Centre's decision to hike train ticket charges in the upcoming budget gives me fear," said Santhi of Rangarajapuram.
