Jacob Rees-Mogg offers SUPERB challenge to Remoaner peers plotting to THWART Brexit

JACOB REES-MOGG presented a superb challenge to unelected members of the House of Lords hoping to thwart Brexit when the EU Withdrawal Bill is passed to Parliament’s upper house to be scrutinised.

The prominent Brexiteer and Conservative MPs has joined calls for significant reforms to the House of Lords after a series of threats from Remoaner peers to attempt to make significant changes to bill.

Having already urged Prime Minister Theresa May to flood the House of Lords with 200 new peers who are willing to force the bill through the upper house, Mr Rees-Mogg has now challenged unelected Remainers to stand for election on an anti-Brexit platform.

During a feisty television exchange with Labour peer Lord Adonis, Mr Rees-Mogg said he should stand in a general election, offering voters a second referendum.

Appearing on the BBC’s Sunday Politics, the Conservative MP said: “People decided in a referendum, the general election manifestos of both parties committed to carrying out the result of that referendum.

Brexit news: Jacob Rees-Mogg challenges unelected Lords hoping to stop Brexit to face election

What should not happen is unelected peers should try to frustrate the will of the British people

Jacob Rees-Mogg

“If Lord Adonis wants to put his case forward, he should try and stand for election – something I don’t believe he has ever done.

“See if he can win a general election, campaigning to reverse the result

“What should not happen is unelected peers should try to frustrate the will of the British people as now expressed in two democratic votes.”

Lord Adonis had argued Britons should be offered another vote on their future European Union future.

The Labour peer is a staunch Remainer and suggested he wants to the entire EU Withdrawal Bill “deleted” when it reaches the House of Lords.

He tweeted: “Spending morning drafting amendments to the EU Withdrawal Bill for debate in the Lords.

“It is such a dreadful bill – all power to the Government, trashing our entire system of trade & international relations, I constantly want to table just one amendment: ‘delete all!’”

Speaking before the BBC debate, Mr Rees-Mogg said the Prime Minister should use her powers of patronage “if the House won’t play by the constitutional rule book”.

He said: “She should keep up her sleeve the ability to appoint enough peers to get business through.

“If the House won’t play by the constitutional rule book, then the PM has to use the extra measures available to her, it could be a couple of hundred.

“There’s no point going in half-cock.”

The Commons voted by a majority of 29 to approve the EU Withdrawal Bill and the proposed legislation will now be passed to peers to scrutinise.
