SATURDAY'S WRESTLING: Hartman wins title for Grayhounds at L-M meet

Burlington High School had an individual champion and a runner-up on the way to a fourth-place team finish in the 10-team Louisa-Muscatine Invitational wrestling tournament Saturday at Letts.

Cedar Rapids Kennedy won the team title with 204 points, edging out West Delaware's 200. West Liberty was third with 195 points and Burlington was fourth at 80. Highland was fifth at 79 points and was followed by host Louisa-Muscatine (76), West Burlington-Notre Dame/Danville (63), WACO (57), Davenport West (43) and Belle Plaine (36).

Louisa-Muscatine and WACO each had an individual champion.

Burlington's Mason Hartman won the 220-pound division by pinning Kennedy's Cam Jones in 42 seconds in the championship match. The Grayhounds' Duncan Delzell finished second at 120 pounds. Gaining fifth-place finishes for Burlington were Drake Bailey (152 pounds), Bryce Angle (160) and Isaiah Perez-Hall (170). Ian Taylor (126), Colin Masters (138) and Elias Cordero (285) each finished sixth.

Louisa-Muscatine's Hunter Connor won the 182-pound title by pinning Belle Plaine's Ethan Allie in 50 seconds in the championship match. The Falcons picked up a third-place finish from Cody Calvelage (120) and fourth-place finishes from Austin Cook (106) and Marcos Maedano (113). Finishing fifth were Hayden Cavelage (132), Max McCulley (138) and Max Mashek (145).

WACO's Cody Crawford decisioned West Burlington-Notre Dame/Danville's Drake Fox, 3-0, to win the 285-pound championship. The Warriors got fourth-place finishes from Jalen Colllins (120) and Jaden Williams (126) and sixt- place finishes from Robert Frazier (132) and Jason Sammons (182).

West Burlington-Notre Dame/Danville had two runners-up — Fox (285) and Tucker Moore at 170 pounds. Caleb LaLonde finished third at 152 pounds and Dreyton LaVeine was third at 195.

5 Wildcats win titles

at Anamosa invite

Columbus/Winfield-Mount Union crowned five individual champions en route to a second-place team finish in the six-team Denny Christenson Tournament at Anamosa.

Anamosa won the team title with 115 points to Columbus/W-MU's 91.5. Northwood-Kinsett was third with 89.5 points and was followed by Iowa City Liberty (87), Starmont (49.5) and Cascade (49).

Columbus/W-MU's Jarod Kadel won both of his matches by fall to win the title at 106 pounds. Tucker Bright also went 2-0, with a fall and a decision, to win the 120-pound title. Cam Rice pinned all four of his opponents and won the championship at 132 pounds. Juanito Piper went 4-0 with two falls and two decisions to capture the 138-pound class. Jorge Miranda decisioned his only opponent for the 285-pound title.

The Wildcats' Brady Barton (113 pounds) and Jose Cereza (145) finished second in their classes. Alberto Lagunas (220) finished third.

2 Panthers win titles

Two Mount Pleasant wrestlers won their weight divisions and the Panthers finished fourth in the six-team Williamsburg Raider Invitational at Williamsburg.

The host team won the team title with 239.5 points. Grinnell was second at 168 and was followed by Perry (130), Mount Pleasant (122.5), Pella (110) and Waterloo West (98).

Mount Pleasant's James DeMeyer went 5-0 on the day with three falls, a technical fall and a decision to win the 170-pound division. Dalton Bass went 4-0 with three falls and a decision to win the 220-pound class.

The Panthers' Brennen Bender (182) and Zach Beason (195) each finished second. Henry Lutovsky (285) was third and Corbin Broeker (106) and Garrett Boecker (160) finished fourth.

Breuer goes 5-0,

Mediapolis 0-5

Mediapolis 285-pounder Brennan Breuer won all five of his matches, but the Bulldogs lost all five of their duals in the Denver tournament.

Mediapolis lost to Dyersville Beckman 55-18, Fennimore (Wis.) 59-10, Mid-Prairie 48-33, Mercs (Minn.) 39-30 and Tipton 31-30.

Fennimore defeated Denver 42-37, in the first-place dual.

Breuer won on three falls and two forfeits. Brennan Swafford went 4-1 at 160 pounds with two falls, a major decision and a forfeit. Swafford, ranked No. 2 in Class 1A, suffered his first loss of the season. Hunter Aney at 152 was also 4-1 with three falls and a decision. Caden Benz (145) won three matches by falls, Reese Thornburg (132) won two falls and a decision and Jordan Riherd (106) posted wins on a decision and a fall. Daryn Kreft (138) pinned one opponent.

Steffensmeier wins

at Urbandale

Fort Madison's Harlan Steffensmeier went 4-0 to win the 152-pound division in the Ed Winger Invitational at Urbandale.

Southeast Polk won the team title with 194 points. Fort Madison and Cedar Falls tied for ninth with 80 points each. There were 20 teams competing.

Harlan Steffensmeier advanced to the championship match with a fall and two technical falls, then decisioned West Des Moines Valley's Grant Stotts 5-4 for the title.

Fort Madison's Ryan Steffensmeier went 3-1 and finished second at 126 pounds. He advanced with a fall and two decisions before being pinned by Centerville's Kayden Kauzlarich in 3:39 in the championship match.

The Bloodhounds' Aaron Steffensmeier was fifth at 145 pounds and Danen Settles took seventh at 220.

Keokuk's Wyatt

makes all-tourney

Keokuk's Matt Wyatt went 5-0 for the day and was named to the Clyde Bean Duals all-tournament team at Iowa City.

Host Iowa City High won the team title with a 5-0 record. Keokuk was sixth at 1-4.

The Chiefs defeated Oskaloosa 31-30, but lost to Muscatine 41-14, Iowa City High 71-6, Cedar Rapids Xavier 48-24 and Decorah 60-21.

Wyatt won his five matches on two falls, a technical fall, a major decision and a decision in the 138-pound class. Teammates Dylan Jeffers and Jerry Glenn both picked up four victories. Jeffers (160 pounds) won on three falls and a decision. Glenn (285) won on two falls, a decision and a forfeit.

Keokuk's Austin Tibbits (195) picked up two wins on a fall and a forfeit and Tres Merydith (113) won two forfeits. Michael Glasscock picked up a victory via a technical fall.

Wapello takes ninth

Wapello had two champions and a pair of runner-up finishes to take ninth in the John Byers Invitational at Wyoming.

The Southeast Polk JV won the team title with 182 1/2 points. The Indians finished with 85 1/2 points.

Winning titles for the Indians were Daniel Meeker at 120 and Mitchell Moore at 126. Meeker went4-0 with a pair of falls and a 12-3 major decision over Bellevue's Austin Michels in the finals. Moore went 3-0 and pinned Trevor Gudenkauf of Midland in 4:51 in the finals.

Colton Meeker (106) and Christopher Ewart (113) each finished second for the Indians, each going 3-1.

Kolby Huxley finished sixth at 160 for the Indians.

Van Buren 15th

Van Buren finished 15th in the 16-team Rich Gray Classic hosted by Interstate 35 High School in Truro.

The host school won the team title with 204 points. Martensdale St. Mary's and Van Meter tied for second with 142 points each. Van Buren scored 36 points.

Van Buren had three sixth-place finishers — Adam Smith at 120 pounds, Caleb Stoltz at 145 and Aidan Franklin at 152.
