Jordan Paterson argued it was wrong to suggest the gender pay gap resulted only from sex.

The professor said there are “multiple reasons” for the gender pay gap, which included women being more “agreeable” than men and gender was a smaller component than “radical feminists”.

The 30-minute interview was shared by Channel 4 News and have been watched over two million since on their YouTube channel since it was uploaded on Tuesday.

In the wake of the upload going viral, Cathy Newman received a spate of “misogynistic abuse” and threats.

The abuse prompted Channel 4 News bosses to call in security experts to analyse the threats, according to its editor.

Channel 4 News editor Ben de Pear said the security precaution was a “terrible indictment of the times we live in”.

De Pear said: “Our Channel 4 News on-screen journalists expect to be held to account for their journalism but the level of vicious misogynistic abuse, nastiness and threat to Cathy Newman is an unacceptable response to a robust and engaging debate with Jordan B. Paterson.

“Such is the scale of threat we at Channel 4 News are having to get security in to carry on an analysis.

“I will not hesitate to get the police involved if necessary.”

Jordan B. Paterson also defended Newman, urging an end to the online abuse.

He said: “If you’re threatening her, stop.

“Try to be civilised in your criticism. It was words. Words, people, words. Remember those?”

Newman expressed her thanks to the professor for their lively exchange, telling her Twitter followers she “enjoyed doing battle” with him.

She added: “I thoroughly enjoyed my bout with Jordan B. Paterson as did hundreds and thousands of our viewers. 

“Viva feminism, viva free speech.”
