Former player, USA Hockey executive Jim Johannson dead at 53-years-old

Longtime USA Hockey member Jim Johannson died in his sleep Sunday morning at the age of 53, USA Hockey announced Sunday in a press release.

Johannson, a Colorado Springs, Colo., resident,  is the assistant executive director and general manager of the 2018 U.S. men’s Olympic hockey team. He joined USA Hockey in 2000 as manager of international activities and U.S. Olympic Committee relations. 

“We are beyond shocked and profoundly saddened,” said Pat Kelleher, executive director of USA Hockey. “As accomplished as Jim was in hockey, he was the absolute best, most humble, kind and caring person you could ever hope to meet. His impact on our sport and more importantly the people and players in our sport have been immeasurable. Our condolences go out to his entire family, but especially to his loving wife Abby and their young daughter Ellie.”

Johannson attended Wisconsin and played four years there as a forward from 1982-86. He was drafted by the Hartford Whalers in the seventh round of the 1982 draft. He played seven seasons in the International Hockey League. 

Johannson also participated with Team USA in the Winter Games in 1988 and 1992 and the world championships in 1992.
