Officials are raising the projected cost of the first phase of California's bullet train by 35 percent, to $10.6 billion. The extra $2.8 billion comes because of delays in obtaining rights of way and barriers along parts of the track a 199-mile segment in the Central Valley that is partly under construction. Letter writer says original estimates for high-speed rail are turning out to be wildly inaccurate.

The cost of the high-speed rail through the Central Valley has surged from an original estimate of $6 billion to the current estimate of $10.6 billion. The total project had already been increased from $40 billion to $64 billion.

This project was sold as being competitive with other forms of transportation including air using, of course the original estimates. These original estimates are turning out to be wildly inaccurate, and this latest adjustment is just for the 119 miles in the Central Valley. Wait until they get to the Tehachapi mountains.
It’s a guarantee that they will use the argument that we can’t stop now — we’ve already invested billions. This can’t continue.
