Criminal, cop injured in exchange of fire in Varanasi

VARANASI: A wanted criminal Ashok Yadav and a crime branch constable Sumant Singh suffered bullet injuries during an exchange of fire between the criminals and police in Seer Gowardhan area of Lanka police station on Sunday late evening.

According to SSP RK Bhardwaj, the teams of crime branch and Lanka police had found location of Yadav in Seer Gowardhan area when they cordoned the locality. On seeing police, Yadav and his accomplice tried to escape, but they were surrounded by cops near Lautubir area when they opened fire on the cops. A constable Sumant Singh suffered bullet injuries on hand after which police also retaliated in similar style.


The sound of indiscriminate firing created panic in the area. After the criminals stopped firing, police reached near them when it was found that one of them had suffered injuries.


Police took both of them under custody and rushed Yadav and Sumant to trauma center of Banaras Hindu University. The accomplice of Yadav was identified as Arjun.


Police said that Yadav was involved in over a dozen criminal cases including murder and extortion. On Friday, he had threatened a doctor of radiology department of IMS-BHU to extort Rs 15 lakh. This doctors had lodged a named FIR against Yadav with Lanka police on Friday night. After it the crime branch had also swung into action.
