A PERSONAL JOURNEY
It’s been an eye-opening season for Terry Adolph, bowling in leagues and coaching the Kent Roosevelt Rough Riders.
The Rough Rider boys are again in the thick of things in Suburban League bowling, recently upending previously undefeated Stow.
This season, it is personal for Adolph, who has carried a 200 average for more than 20 years, but due to a hand injury, she had to start bowling with her left hand.
"Everyone on the team has been my cheerleader," Adolph said.
Struggling at the beginning, she started three months ago with an 85 average, she refocused and simplified two weeks ago.
"I realized I needed to start like I teach a beginner," said Adolph, who viewed arrows as transition zones, not targets, with the heads and dot markers also targets, so she would lay the ball on the lane early and allow it to roll smoothly.
"Now it is starting to come together," said Adolph. "I may never be able to bowl right-handed again, but I’m OK with that. I have a functional (form), I’m grateful for that and I have learned more about myself in these past three months, increasing my average from 85 to 110, making me, I think, a better coach.
"I thought I would be better at bowling left-handed," Adolph added. "Turns out, I can be better."
It sets a good example for all bowlers who struggle and strive to be better while loving the game.
