South Medford received scoring from all nine players for the first time this season en route to a 95-53 victory over visiting Arcata, California, in nonconference girls basketball Saturday.
Last season, the Tigers took South Medford (10-7) to double overtime before falling.
“They’re a good team,” said South Medford coach Tom Cole. “They have some good players. We played really well today. I’ve only seen us play better a couple of times this year.”
Freshman guard Toni Coleman paced the Panthers with 20 points, six assists and six steals.
“She’s so fast, arguably the fastest kid we’ve had in our program, ” said Cole. “She got out on the break pretty well and pushed the tempo offensively.”
The Panthers got a big contribution from junior Ula Chamberlin with 17 points, seven rebounds, four steals and three assists.
“Ula played smart with foul trouble,” said Cole. “She did some things that showed maturity.”
South trailed by four points after the first quarter but combined to outscore Arcata 52-28 in the second and third quarters.
With the Panthers in foul trouble, Cole went to his backups and got positive production.
