1. All-American Murder by James Patterson and Alex Abramovich with Mike Harvkey (Little, Brown, non-fiction, on sale Jan. 22)
What it’s about: Investigates the life, and death, of one-time New England Patriots star Aaron Hernandez, sentenced to life in prison in the murder of former semi-pro football player Odin Lloyd.
The buzz: Patterson is known for his prolific, best-selling thrillers, but he also has written non-fiction, including 2016’s Filthy Rich, about financier Jeffrey Epstein’s sordid sex scandal.
2. The Mitford Murders by Jessica Fellowes (Minotaur, fiction, on sale Jan. 23)
What it’s about: Murder mystery inspired by England’s famed Mitford sisters, involving a real unsolved murder and set in the 1920s.
The buzz: Fellowes, niece of Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes, is the author of five companion volumes to the beloved PBS series; a “pitch-perfect mystery,” says Booklist.
3. Rebel by Nick Nolte (William Morrow, non-fiction, on sale Jan. 23)
What it’s about: The actor, 76, writes about his life and career, including the ups (three Oscar nominations) as well as the downs (addiction issues).
The buzz: Nolte, who just received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, starred in Graves, an Epix comedy series that was recently canceled after its second season.
4. Anatomy of a Scandal by Sarah Vaughan (Emily Bestler Books/Atria Books, fiction, on sale Jan. 23)
What it’s about: In Britain, a wife stands by her husband, a public figure, when he is accused of a crime in a case tried by a determined female prosecutor.
The buzz: “Engrossing, twist-filled,” says Publishers Weekly in a starred review.
5. Happiness Is a Choice You Make: Lessons From a Year Among the Oldest Old by John Leland (Sarah Crichton Books/Farrar, Straus & Giroux, non-fiction, on sale Jan. 23)
What it’s about: Inspired by an ongoing series in The New York Times in which Leland follows the lives of six New Yorkers age 85 and older.
The buzz: “Edifying and often quite moving,” says Kirkus Reviews.
