Week-long Madhu Mela kicks off

On the occasion of 194th birth anniversary of poet Michael Madhusudan Dutta, a week-long Madhu Mela began at Michael Madhusudan Academy in Sagardari of Jessore's Keshabpur upazila yesterday.

Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperative Minister Engineer Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain inaugurated the fair as the chief guest.

State Minister for Public Administration Ismat Ara Sadique, local lawmaker Monirul Islam, Khulna Divisional Commissioner Lokman Hossain Miah, Jessore Deputy Commissioner Md Asrafuddin and Keshabpur municipality Mayor Rafiqul Islam were present at the inaugural function.

Sagardari Madhu Mela committee organised the fair, said Mostafizul Islam, chairman of Sagardari Union Parishad.

The chairman said discussions will be held every day where eminent litterateurs, poets, educationists, writers, lyrics and dramatists will participate. The discussions on the life, works and teachings of the great poet will be followed by sessions of recitation, cultural functions, dances and dramas. Renowned singers and vocalists from Dhaka and other parts of the country will participate at the programmes.

The weeklong Madhu Mela will also include jatra, circus, puppet show and kabi gaan. A large number of people from all ages are expected to throng the fair every day.

Considered one of the greatest poets of Bangla literature and a pioneer of Bangla sonnets, Madhusudan was born at Sagardari village on January 25 in 1824.
