BOYS BASKETBALL

Southeastern Homeschool 63, New Bern Homeschool 18

Nine players got in the scoring column for the Cardinals, who jumped out to a 20-4 lead after the opening eight minutes.

Andy Boehling led the way with nine points on 3 of 4 shooting from 3-point range. Philip Strickland, Ray Still, Noah Sibbett and JT Bentfield each finished with eight points.

With the win, Southeastern Homeschool improved to 6-11 overall and 4-8 in conference play.

New Hanover 64, Jack Britt 49

Senior forward Hayden Edgar scored 15 points and grabbed eight rebounds as the Wildcats won for the fourth time this week.

New Hanover (15-3) shot 49 percent (23 of 47) from the field and 42 percent (8 of 19) from 3-point range. Freddie Taylor finished with 13 points and six assists.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Hoggard 48, Topsail 34

Both teams struggled to find offense early with Topsail taking a 16-14 lead into the locker room.

Hoggard's (17-2, 9-0 Mideastern) halftime adjustments led to a 17-point third quarter that put the home team on top by nine points. Angel Smith finished with 12 points and 12 rebounds, while Blair Barefoot added 12 points and four assists.

Topsail (11-6, 2-5) has now lost three in a row.

Laney 59, North Brunswick 15

Freshman standout Saniya Rivers scored 19 of her game-high 26 points in the opening half in a lopsided home Mideastern Conference victory.

Rivers finished the game 12 of 21 from the field. She didn't play in the fourth quarter. Jennifer Jacobs added eight points for Laney (16-2, 7-1).

North Brunswick (6-10, 1-7) got four points from Alleigh Himes.

New Hanover 57, Jack Britt 24

The Wildcats picked up their third victory of the week behind 15 points from Amani Muhammad.

Azariah Fields added 11 points, eight assists, five rebounds and five steals and Willaya Banister came off the bench to score seven points for New Hanover (15-4).

WRESTLING

Ashley 44, Topsail 36

The Screaming Eagles secured the win by taking eight bouts, including six by pin. The fastest came from Josh Stewart, who needed only 23 seconds to win at 170 pounds.

Jake Stewart (132), Alex Grommesh (138), Nathan Ellen (182), George Fragos (220) and Ricky Longnecker (285) also had pins for the Screaming Eagles.

Topsail got a 46 second pin from Nathan Martinez at 145.

St. Pauls Bulldog Brawl

West Brunswick crowned three champions and finished second in the final tournament of the regular season.

Reigning Athlete of the Week Jacary Bethel not only claimed the 170-pound title, but he was also named the Most Outstanding Wrestler.

Gavin Bipes (120) and Shane Smith (145) were West Brunswick's other champions. Both also picked up their 100th career victory.

Cory Snead finished second at 195 and Sae'vyon McCray was third at 182.

The Trojans host North Brunswick for the Mideastern Conference championship on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.
