Lady Lions soccer finishes perfect 3-0 run at Georgetown tournament

GEORGETOWN — The Brownwood Lady Lions soccer team completed an undefeated three-day run at the Georgetown tournament with victories of 5-0 over Giddings Saturday and 2-1 over previously undefeated Class 5A El Paso High Friday.

In Friday's game, El Paso entered the contest with a 7-0 record after posting a 20-5 mark during the 2017 campaign.

Miranda Guerrero and Maddy Garza scored the goals for Brownwood, while Guerrero and Carly Person were credited with assists.

Defensively, Channing Barron tallied eight saves with one goal allowed — just the second goal yielded by the Lady Lions this season.

“The girls played with so much poise, confidence and heart,” said Brownwood first-year head coach Brent Hardwick. “Today is one of the proudest moments of my coaching career. This is just the beginning for us and by far not the final product. It was definitely a full team effort and a statement win for this team.”

In Saturday's finale against Giddings, Garza and Person scored two goals each for the Lady Lions while Aleyia Cotton chipped in one. Assists belonged to Person, Guerrero, Taylar Kinzler, Madison Chesser and Khloe Tobien.

The Lady Lions recorded their fifth shutout defensive as Channing Barron pitched a shutout in her time in goal, while Tarynne DeLap recorded two saves in goal in the second half.

Brownwood began tournament action Thursday with a 2-0 victory over Fredericksburg in its first action since Jan. 6.

“The weekend was a very strong performance against strong competition,” Hardwick said. “We're building a lot of confidence that we need heading into a tough district season.”

The Lady Lions are back in action at 5 p.m. Friday at Abilene Cooper, the first game of a doubleheader in which the Lions will follow against the Cougars.
