ABU DHABI: Al Wahda lifted the Year of Zayed Arabian Gulf Super Cup trophy, defeating their Abu Dhabi rivals Al Jazira 2-0 at Baniyas Stadium to take home the first trophy of the 2017/2018 season.
It was Al Jazira who started off the game quickly when Romarinho received the ball in the box from Ali Mabkhout within the first 90 seconds of the game, fighting off his marker, but shooting straight at the young Mohamed Al Shamsi in goal.
The first goal of the night was Al Wahda’s. Sebastian Tagliabue capitalised on a misplaced pass by Salem Sultan to power a low shot from outside of the box that hit the post. The rebound fell to Mourad Batna who finished into the empty net in the 21st minute. In the second half, Al Wahda continued their dominance and the pressure got the better of Al Jazira who conceded a penalty in the 59th minute. Ismail Matar ran straight at Khaseif before being brought down in the box. Hungarian winger Balazs Dszudszak converted from the spot to make it 2-0 for Laurentiu Reghecampf’s men.
A second win over their rivals this month handed Al Wahda their third Super Cup title, after they had won 4-2 in the Arabian Gulf League. Incidentally, the Clarets’ previous title had come against Al Jazira too when they defeated them 7-6 on penalties after a 2-2 draw in normal time.
