The education system should be more job oriented to ensure employment for the young generation, University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman Prof Abdul Mannan said yesterday.
“The young population should be seen as manpower resources and time befitting education and skills should be provided to them,” he said while speaking at the fifth convocation of United International University (UIU) at Satarkul in the capital.
Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid conferred the degrees to a total of 962 students of the university including four who received gold medals.
Speaking as special guest, the UGC chairman said nowadays parents and students give priority to certificate of an educational institution rather than giving importance to the education itself.
However, he suggested the students to focus on gaining skills for the work sectors rather than focusing on marks.
Education minister said the universities must produce new knowledge and prioritise research.
Professor Dr Chowdhury Mofizur Rahman, vice-chancellor of UIU, called upon the students to be responsible in social and professional life.
Dr Ahmad Kaikaus, secretary (power division) of Ministry of power, Energy and Mineral Resources; and Hasan Mahmood Raja, chairman of Board of Trustees of UIU, were also present at the convocation.
