A man has been found dead after a motorised buggy veered down a concrete embankment and into a creek in Melbourne's east.

Police believe the man was riding along the Scotchmans Creek Trail at Mount Waverley on Saturday when the buggy veered over a concrete embankment and into the water.

A passer-by saw the buggy, which looks similar to a golf cart, at 10:50pm and called emergency services.

When they arrived, police found the 52-year-old from Mount Waverley dead.

It is not yet known how long the man had been there.

Investigators have yet to establish the exact circumstances surrounding his death, police said.
