LAXMIPUR, Jan 20: District administration foiled a child marriage bid at Nagmud Village in Ramganj Upazila recently.
Upazila Parishad Member Arif Hossain foiled the marriage following the direction of Upazila Nirbahi Officer Mohammad Abu Yousuf and UP Chairman Bashir Ahmed.
The chairman said "We took a bond from both the party that the marriage will not take place".
Locals said the wedding of Sumaiya Akter, 14, daughter of Jainal Abedin of the village and Mohammad Ershad, 30, of the same village was scheduled to be held on Tuesday night.
Neighbours informed the matter to UNO and chairman. Later, Ward No 2 member of Bholakot Union Parishad Arif Hossain called off the marriage at the girl's home.
Later, the representative of the Women Affairs Officer visited the place and took written statement from both the families.
UNO Mohammad Abu Yousuf of Ramganj Upazila said "We foiled the child marriage bid soon after knowing the matter".
