Bus carrying holiday-makers to the snow crashes in Turkey, killing 11 and injuring 44

Turkish officials say a bus carrying mostly holiday-makers on a ski trip has crashed into trees on the side of a road, killing 11 passengers and injuring 44 others.

Governor Ozdemir Cakacak of Eskisehir province said the bus was travelling overnight from the Turkish capital of Ankara to the western city of Bursa when it crashed on a road in his region on Saturday morning (local time).

The road was empty and neither wet nor frozen, Mr Cakacak told local media.

The passengers on the bus were mainly families en route to Uludag ski resort to spend the holidays.

Local media quoted the bus driver, who was lightly injured, as telling police that he veered toward the side of the road to avoid what he thought was a stray dog on the road.

The report said he had been detained and an investigation launched.

Last year, 7,300 people died in over 1 million accidents on Turkish roads, according to the Turkish statistical institute.
