DARIEN—Eric Cimino and Brendan Knightly scored in the final 5:42 to propel the New Canaan High School boys ice hockey team to a dramatic 5-4 non-league triumph over Notre Dame-Fairfield Saturday night at the Darien ice rink.

The Rams (5-5 overall) awarded the game puck to the family of 10-year-old New Canaan resident Nico Mallozzi, who played hockey with the CT Roughriders and died on January 14 from complications of the flu.

“The younger brothers of many of the kids on our hockey team played with Nico. There’s been so much emotion as the whole town (of New Canaan) has been reeling for the past week,” said New Canaan High School coach Clark Jones. “This was our team doing our part to bring his family some relief.”

DETERMINATION RULES FOR NEW CANAAN

A powerplay goal by Quinn McMahon and Gunnar Granito canning a second rebound in front with 41.4 seconds left gave New Canaan a 2-0 edge after the first period.

The second period featured eight penalties. ND-Fairfield scored three times (twice on the powerplay) for a 3-2 edge at the 8:57 mark.

New Canaan had the man advantage as well as three stretches of 5-on-3 for less than a minute for the remainder of the period without scoring.

“We had chances,” New Canaan’s Jones said. “But too many shots wide or high over the net.”

The third period was a different story for the Rams.

Griffin Arnone tallied with two seconds left on a powerplay off a pretty feed from Sam Augustine for 3-3.

After McMahon got hammered by a pair of ND-Fairfield defenders in the Lancers’ zone, Eric Cimino corralled the puck and scored for 4-4 with 5:42 left.

Knightly put home the game-winner just 1:31 later for the 5-4 final. New Canaan goalie Dylan Shane registered 13 saves.

“What we said before the third period was ‘We have to get back to pressuring the puck. We have to move our feet. We have to move the puck.’ ” New Canaan’s Jones said. “ND-Fairfield’s goalie (6-foot-4 Andrew Jones) was coming out of the net to cut down angles effectively. In the third period, we took the extra time and attacked him from the side.”

TOUGH LOSS FOR ND-FAIRFIELD

New Notre Dame-Fairfield coach John Longo has inherited an interesting schedule in his first season.

The Lancers are now 6-3 overall but have played six opponents from outside the state of Connecticut.

On Saturday, ND-Fairfield did a good job on the penalty kill. But the Lancers’ exertions cost them in the end.

“In the second period (outscoring NC by 3-0 on goals by Anthony Bouvier and Nate Stiles (2)) we showed what we are capable of,” ND-Fairfield’s Longo said. “But it was so taxing to kill off all those penalties. You can’t overcome that. We ran out of gas in the end. We got away from what makes us successful.”

Tom Kuryla’s goal with 10:33 left gave ND-Fairfield a shortlived 4-3 edge. Jones finished the evening with 29 saves in net.

“We’re 6-3 overall but we’re still learning how to win. We’re still immature. We lose focus,” said Longo, who has 10 seniors on the Lancers’ roster. “We’re ahead with six minutes left. We have to make good decisions. We made it easy for New Canaan to rally. We have to become a tougher team to play against. That’s the bottom line.”

LANCERS WILL BE SHORTHANDED

With 17.6 seconds remaining, ND-Fairfield senior co-captain and defenseman Jason Ziegler got into a scrum with New Canaan’s 6-foot-2 Shamus O’Hora.

Ziegler received a five-minute fighting penalty as well as a 10-minute misconduct penalty.

Ziegler will likely miss Wednesday’s road clash at Bennett rink against ND-West Haven.
