APPLETON EAST 42, APPLETON NORTH 39

APPLETON - Appleton East handed Appleton North its first Fox Valley Association loss of the season in the game at East.

Chelsey Van Gompel scored 12 points to lead Appleton East and also played a strong floor game for the Patriots against Appleton North’s pressure defense.

“Chelsey is our point guard and against that pressure, that’s a lot to handle. They really bring it,” East coach Joe La Chapell said. “She handled it really well tonight. Her ballhandling and leadership was really good tonight.”

Cam Neubauer added 11 points for the Patriots, who led by six late in the game before the Lightning hit a 3-pointer with four seconds remaining.

Sydney Levy led Appleton North with 11 points and Kari Brekke had nine for the Lightning.

“Defensively we played pretty well. We dug in and competed,” La Chapell said. “They’re a very good team. They had an off night shooting. If they don’t struggle from the outside, it’s probably a different story. They just had one of those nights and we were lucky enough to get one.”

North fell to 10-3 overall and 9-1 in the FVA, while East improved to 10-5 overall and 7-4 in the league.
