PANAMA CITY — After a federal jury ruled that an inmate was unlawfully pepper-sprayed by three Liberty County correctional officers as an act of retaliation, they have awarded the inmate with only nominal damages in the amount of $10, according to court records.

The jury found in favor of inmate Matthew Thompson in his lawsuit against Liberty County Correctional officers James Sikes, Daniel Price and William Goff. The civil lawsuit went before a jury in the U.S. District Court of the Northern District of Florida. Thompson claimed he had legal papers taken from him and was pepper-sprayed for filing grievances against the officers, which the jury found to be true, court records indicated.

However, when awarding Thompson damages in the case, they found those damages amounted to only $10.
