Kamothe police have arrested a 38-year-old man for raping his 12-year-old niece, a Class VII student, for the last four years. The accused, identified as Rajan Gorishankar Chaudhary, a resident of Devleela society at Sector 10 in Kamothe, had brought his brother’s wife and two kids to Navi Mumbai from Bihar in 2005.

Senior Police Inspector Ashok Naik said, “The brother, however, chose to stay back, and sent his wife and kids for a better living. His sister-in-law worked as a help in a hospital while the accused worked at construction sites.”

According to the police, the accused stayed with his brother’s family and used to allegedly get drunk and rape his niece from the time she was in Class III. After his sister-in-law left for work, the accused sent his nephew out on an errand.

Mr. Naik said the accused threatened to kill the girl’s mother and brother if she told anyone about the rape. Mr. Naik said, “On Thursday, when her mother came from work, she found her daughter in bathroom for a long time and learnt that she was crying inside.

“She suspected something wrong as the accused was also at home in a drunken state. She later forced her daughter to reveal what had happened. Once she opened up, her mother called her colleague, who advised her report to the police. When she filed a case, we held the accused.”

The accused has been charged under relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act.
