President Trump did not cut a deal with Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., on spending and immigration after a 90 minute White House meeting, and instead, he told Schumer to negotiate with Republicans, according to Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn, R-Texas.
"The president told him to go back and talk to [House Speaker] Paul Ryan and [Senate Majority Leader] Mitch McConnell and work it out," Cornyn said, citing White House chief of staff John Kelly as a source.
Democrats are refusing to back a bill that would fund the government until Feb. 16, and are instead asking for a four or five-day funding deal during which time they want a larger accord on immigration and spending for all of fiscal 2018.
The Senate is expected to vote this afternoon on the Feb. 16 bill. Democrats and a few Republicans plan to vote no and will block the bill from passing.
A temporary funding bill runs out at midnight.
