Katy Perry was two songs into Friday’s performance at Gila River Arena when she took a moment to recall her last appearance in the Valley.
“So the last time I was in Phoenix,” she said, “I played a very small show.”
Then, after a slight pause, she added, “called the Super Bowl.”
She even brought along a friend who joined her on the field that day at University of Phoenix Stadium.
“He was born in Phoenix,” she playfully noted, as Left Shark joined her onstage later in the set to rapturous applause.
With Left Shark by her side, she reminisced about her childhood in the Valley.
“I used to live in Scottsdale,” she announced. “I, too, have hiked Camelback Mountain. And it made me very thirsty.”
Then she talked about “a boy named Chip” who used to tease her in grade school in Paradise Valley.
“All the boys were named Chip back then,” she joked before addressing Chip himself.
“I remember how much you teased me on the playground, on the cement and in the sawdust.”
Then, with a laugh, she concluded her trip down memory lane with “well look at me now. you should have locked this down in first grade.”
She also referred to her time here as “the best days of my life.”
