Recommend catching this on iPlayer if you aren’t (or haven’t been)watching. Tucked away on bbc2 morning telly - really good adventure tv stuff.
One question for climbers - how the hell do you trust those pegs (or whatever they’re called) you stick in the rock to take your whole weight??

Whole thing is mental to me! Couldn't do any of it. "Camping" on a vertical cliff? Come on!

Only about halfway through episode 1 (thanks for the PSA) and haven't spotted any pitons yet - they seem to be using standard British trad gear, ie nuts and cams. Anyway, in the same way as pitons you trust them to hold your weight because they do - they're rated at something like 2 tonnes. The biggest issue is the bit of rock you put them in failing, which is why you put in multiple bits. I suppose you just get used to trusting them, to the point you don't even think about it (though personally I've still yet to take a lead fall on trad gear, should probably try and get that out of the way this year - I tend to climb well within my comfort zone on trad).

I'm always fascinated by the camera people, I presume they do that climb too? Scary stuff.

Is that the one on the south american tepui? The only thing I came away with was that he was not the most encouraging belayer you could hope to have. I vaguely remember he spent half the time commenting loudly to camera that if his mate fell off here, he was a gonner!
