VARANASI: Taking note of the underground construction in Dalmandi market near the highly sensitive Kashi Vishwanath-Gyanvapi complex, divisional commissioner Nitin Ramesh Gokarn on Friday asked the Varanasi Development Authority (VDA) to demolish the illegal buildings. He also asked the SSP to provide police force to the VDA for this purpose.

Following the discovery of a newly-constructed basement in an area of over 8,000sqft beneath old buildings in the densely populated Dalmandi market by SSP RK Bhardwaj, the VDA sealed the building and began a survey. An FIR was lodged against seven people. Two of them were arrested and sent to jail on Thursday.
