AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — Several lawmakers want to pass new tax credits aimed at jobs, families and lawyers.

The Maine Legislature's taxation committee is set to hear public hearings on several such bills Monday.

House Republican Leader Ken Fredette's bill as posted online would double the earned income tax credit while also enacting a new child tax credit. Fredette is running for governor.

Legislation backed by Democratic Rep. Donna Bailey would provide an income tax credit for attorneys who agreed to practice in underserved areas.

Democratic Senate Leader Troy Jackson is backing a conceptual bill to provide a tax credit to U.S. businesses that employ Maine residents who work in logging and trucking in Maine.
