What The USA TODAY Network-Tennessee knows about the Titans coaching change:

Who's out: Titans coach Mike Mularkey

What happened: The Titans fired Mike Mularkey on Monday, two days after a 35-14 loss to New England in the AFC playoffs. He led the Titans to back-to-back 9-7 regular-season records and their first playoff win since Jan. 3, 2004. He had a 21-22 overall record with the Titans.

Why now? That's the most curious part. The Titans reportedly offered Mularkey a contract extension last week. He gave no indication during Sunday's postseason press conference that a coaching change was coming. Titans beat writer Jason Wolf reported that Robinson first started thinking of letting Mularkey go during the team's three-game losing streak in December.

Haven't we been down this road before?:Yes. The new coach will be the third in four seasons and the fifth since the Titans moved to Tennessee in 1997.

What's next:The search begins. Robinson will lead the search. But there's no doubt that controlling owner Amy Adams Strunk will give the final approval. Robinson and Strunk must get this right.

Who are the leading candidates. There are reports that the obvious front runner is taking a different job: The Indianapolis Star reports that Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels could land in Indianapolis soon. His connection to Robinson in New England appeared to make him the early favorite. Titans beat writer Jason Wolf names 10 candidates (including McDaniels).

What are the fans saying? Most are quite happy that Mularkey is gone. His firing was one of the top trending topics on Twitter on Monday.

Wait, aren't other teams looking for coaches, too: Yes, besides the Colts, there are other open across the NFL. The Raiders' hiring of Jon Gruden was the first domino in the NFL's annual coaching turnstile.
