WILMINGTON -- Jury selection is set to begin Monday for Aquan De’Shan Richardson charged with murder in the May 18, 2016, overdose death of Joshua McBride.

Here are three things you should know about the case:

1. Richardson, 26, is charged with second-degree murder, attempt to sell/deliver a controlled substance, sell/deliver controlled substance within 1,000 feet of a school and two counts of possession with intent to manufacture/sell/distribute a controlled substance. Some of the drug charges stem from offenses separate from the sale of heroin to McBride. In one instance, Richardson attempted to sell heroin to a police informant, according to the arrest warrants.

2. McBride, 28, died of a heroin overdose on May 18, 2016, at his father’s New Hanover County home. According to family, McBride struggled with a heroin addiction for 10 years. In his obituary, his family wrote: “Josh fought a brutally honest, courageous, and painful fight with addiction. Sadly that was a battle he would not win. We pray that Josh is at peace now. His long struggle is over. We pray that his life will have an impact on others who may suffer from addiction.”

3. Richardson was arrested in September 2016 and has remained in the New Hanover County jail with bail set at $5 million. His criminal history shows just one prior charge. In 2011, he was convicted of misdemeanor possession of a controlled substance for which he received probation.
