NICK KYRGIOS has withdrawn from the Australian Open men's doubles to save himself for the singles.

Nick Kyrgios ranted at the Australian Open after playing doubles

Kyrgios was partnering fellow Aussie Matt Reid in the doubles and they were scheduled to play Frenchmen Jeremy Chardy and Fabrice Martin in the second round today.

But his participation was in doubt when the bad boy went on an X-rated rant yesterday.

He was broken to love in his first-round clash and returned to his chair to shout: "Why the f*** am I playing doubles. Hours in 50 degree heat, really good management."

Kyrgios won that clash then returned later that night to beat Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the singles.

He admitted in his post-match press conference he would consider his participation in the doubles and he's now duly withdrawn.

Tennis pundit Jim Courier thinks it's the right call and said: "If Nick thinks he has a serious chance to win a major, he does need to stop playing doubles.

"It is a mistake to play ... [and] get stuck in a 40 degree day like he did yesterday.

"It is not like they are going to win the doubles. All the players who think they have a serious chance to win majors in singles skip the doubles.

"They just do it because you can get caught out best of five and then you are backing that up."
