Hollywood and Fort Bragg are no strangers to each other.
For much of the post’s 100-year history, Fort Bragg has been home to men and women who have inspired movies with their heroism.
The installation has been a backdrop of quite a few films. In other cases, it’s only briefly mentioned as a training locale for the hero or, sometimes, the villain.
The best movies involving Fort Bragg troops are those based on historical truths. And that’s what you’ll find in the newest such film from Warner Bros., “12 Strong.”
The movie, starring Chris Hemsworth, tells the story of one of the first Special Forces teams to enter Afghanistan after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. It entered theaters this weekend following special premieres outside military installations across the country, including in Fayetteville.
The soldiers depicted in “12 Strong” were from Fort Campbell, Kentucky’s 5th Special Forces Group, but they all trained and have ties to Fort Bragg.
Some became leaders here in the years after that fateful mission, now immortalized on film.
Other movies have more direct ties to the so-called “center of the universe” that is Fort Bragg.
Here are a few of our favorites:
“12 Strong” (2017) - The newest film on this list has been described as a “fictionalized” or “Hollywood-ized” version of true events by the real “horse soldiers” who are portrayed in the film. The star-studded roster made this one of the most anticipated war dramas in recent years.
“The Green Berets” (1968) - A classic John Wayne film that inspired a generation of young men to become Special Forces soldiers and earn the eponymous Green Beret, the film was a financial success but didn’t earn much love from critics as it was released as many turned against the war in Vietnam. The film tells the story of a war reporter sent to cover the conflict alongside a group of Special Forces soldiers.
“Black Hawk Down” (2001) - The big budget war film by which most modern war movies are judged, this film was a critical and box office darling. It tells the story of an elite force of soldiers, including some from the Fort Bragg-based Delta Force, who must fight for survival when a mission goes wrong in Somalia.
“Men Who Stare At Goats” (2009) - This comedy starring George Clooney and Ewan McGregor is a fictionalized version of a book based on the true story of the U.S. Army’s research into unusual and possibly paranormal tools. Several scenes take place at Fort Bragg, but the landscape looks nothing like the land of sand and pine that is Fort Bragg.
“Airborne” (1962) - While the Fort Bragg in some movies looks little like the real thing, that can’t be said of this movie, starring Bobby Diamond, which tells the story of a young man training to become a paratrooper. The movie was filmed on location at Fort Bragg, in Fayetteville and Aberdeen and included members of the 82nd Airborne Division as extras.
“A Bridge Too Far” (1977) - Starring an ensemble cast, this largely historically accurate film tells the story of World War II’s Operation Market Garden during which the 82nd Airborne Division plays a key role.
“The Longest Day” (1962) - Another World War II epic, this film tells the story of the Normandy landings on D-Day. John Wayne returns to this list to portray a battalion commander in the 82nd Airborne Division.
“Sergeant York” (1941) - The highest-grossing film of the year, this movie tells the story of one of the most famous soldiers of the 82nd Airborne Division, with actor Gary Cooper playing the role of decorated World War I hero Sgt. Alvin York.
“See Here, Private Hargrove” (1944) - This black and white comedy is set at Fort Bragg and is based on the memoirs of Marion Hargrove. Hargrove wrote for the Fort Bragg newspaper in 1941, and his memoirs became a runaway best seller after they were published the next year.
“Brothers at War” (2009) - An award-winning documentary about a filmmaker who follows his two brothers to war, this film delves into the impact of war overseas and the toll it takes on families and loved ones at home.
“Travis: A Soldier’s Story” (2013) - Another documentary, this film tells the story of Staff Sgt. Travis Mills, an 82nd Airborne Division paratrooper who loses all of his limbs in Afghanistan. It was filmed over five days near Fort Bragg and in Texas and also features a re-enactment of the blast and family videos shot with Mill’s wife’s cellphone.
