“This year is just an amazing situation,” said Roman Vilfand of the Moscow State University’s meteorological station. “The duration (of the appearance of the sun) in December usually amounts to tens of hours.” As per Russia’s RBC magazine, Roman Vilfand explained that cyclonic eddies were seen “anomalously often” in December and the same had led to cloudiness. The last record in Moscow for darkness was set in December 2000 when the city saw three hours of direct sunlight over the whole month. Russian winters are known for their “bone-chilling cold spells” but this week the temperature dropped to whopping -67 degree Celsius in Yakutia, a region in Russia’s far east. The conditions are so severe that eyebrows and eyelashes are also getting frozen in this region. The cold spell has led to the grounding of public transport as well. As per daily newspaper Moskovsky Komsomolets, the dearth of sunshine has also led to a great surge in visits to psychiatrists in the capital and the number is quite more than the expected seasonal rise.
