Phillips leads Lakeland boys cagers past Walled Lake Central

MOTT 52, MILFORD 35: On Jan. 19, Tariq Hardy scored 13 points as Lakes Valley Conference leader Waterford Mott (8-1, 6-0) pulled away in the second half to beat the visiting Mavericks (5-3, 4-2).

David McCullum and Michael Hardy chipped in with 12 points apiece for the victorious Corsairs, who outscored Milford 38-19 in the second half after trailing 18-16 at intermission. Mott was 9-of-19 free throw shooting.

Junior forward Gunner Gustafson led Milford with 12 points, 13 rebounds and eight blocks, while senior guard Aiden Warzecha added 10 points, nine boards and five steals.

"We shot 29 percent from the field and only had one three-pointer and we average six a game," Milford coach David Gilbert said. "It was bad shooting. You can't shoot 10-of-26 from the free throw line and expect to win against a team like Mott, which dictated tempo the second half."

LAKELAND 48, WALLED LAKE CENTRAL 42: Cass Phillips, a 6-9 senior center, posted 16 points, 14 rebounds and four blocks in a LVC victory Jan. 19 at home over the Vikings (2-6, 2-5).

Junior forward Patrick McDonald added 10 points for the victorious Eagles, while Houston Tucker led Central with 15.

SOUTH LYON 42, KETTERING 37: On Jan. 19, Conner Feliks scored 13 points and Noah Grimes added 10 as the Lions (6-5, 3-4) turned back host Waterford Kettering (2-6, 1-5) in a LVC encounter.

Travis Frazier paced Kettering with 10 points.

WALLED LAKE WESTERN 60, WALLED LAKE NORTHERN 57: Myles Dalton racked up a game-best 25 points on Jan. 19  as the Warriors (5-3, 5-1) held off host Knights in a LVC game.

Jake Haver scored 15 points to lead Northern, while Andy Millikan added 12. Jack McGuire and Andre Price each chipped in with 11.

MILFORD 58, SOUTH LYON 42: Junior guard Nolan Rand poured in a game-high 21 points to lead four players in double figures as the Mavericks (5-2, 4-1) cruised to a LVC triumph Jan. 16 over the host Lions (5-5, 2-4).

Milford also got contributions from senior guard Aiden Warzecha (11 points, five rebounds, five assists), junior forward Gunnar Gustafson (10 points, 13 rebounds) and senior forward Kyle Soderberg (10 points).

The Mavericks, who led 25-15 at halftime and 40-29 after three quarters, made 12-of-21 free throws.

Will Kelley scored 16 and Ben Call added nine for the Lions, who went 12-of-21 from the foul stripe.

WALLED LAKE NORTHERN 49, WALLED LAKE CENTRAL 43: Jack McGuire scored 15 points and Andre Price added 14 to lead the Knights (5-4, 3-2) to a LVC victory Jan. 16 against the host Vikings.

Houston Tucker paced Central with 14 points.

MOTT 57, SOUTH LYON EAST 31: In a LVC game Jan. 16, David McCullum scored 17 points and Ashton Franklin added 12 as  host Waterford Mott (7-1, 5-0) remained in first place with a victory over the Cougars (4-6, 1-5).

Nick Branton scored 12 points for East, which trailed 13-2 after one quarter and 27-12 at halftime.

WALLED LAKE WESTERN 58, LAKELAND 57: On Jan. 16, Myles Dalton scored a game-high 19 points the visiting Warriors (4-3, 4-1) escaped with a LVC victory over White Lake Lakeland (6-3, 2-3).

Spencer Brown and Cam Williamson chipped in with 13 and 12 points, respectively, for Western, which led 28-25 at halftime and 36-31 after three quarter.

Cody McComas had 11 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists to lead the Eagles. Cass Phills added 11 points and four blocks, while Patrick McDonald contributed nine points and four boards.

Western was 14-of-24 from the foul line, while Lakeland was 11-of-14.

Girls basketball

WALLED LAKE CENTRAL 41, LAKELAND 16: On Jan. 19, host Walled Lake Central (8-3, 4-3) got a game-high 15 points from Rizaria Franklin in a Lakes Valley Conference victory over White Lake Lakeland (0-11, 0-7).

SOUTH LYON EAST 48, MOTT 30: Senior Mackenzie Mallory pumped in 19 points to propel the Cougars (8-3, 6-1) to a LVC win Jan. 16 at home over Waterford Mott (5-5, 2-4).

Lucy Cronin and Brook Willenborg each added eight points, while Rachel Waranauckas contributed six for East, which led 26-17 at intermission and 40-23 after three quarters. The Cougars made 7-of-8 foul shots.

Arianna Harden scored 13 for the Corsairs, who went 6-of-9 from the free throw stripe.

SOUTH LYON 36, MILFORD 30: On Jan. 16, Danielle Booth scored 10 points and sister Morgan Booth contributed nine as the Lions (5-5, 3-4) turned back the host Mavericks (3-7, 1-5) in a LVC encounter.

Lauren Carrannanto led Milford with 10 points, while Olivia Seestadt pulled down 11 rebounds.

Bailey Pattinson also contributed six points for the Mavericks, who trailed 22-16 at halftime and 28-24 after three quarters.

Milford was 6-of-14 from the foul line, while South Lyon was 7-of-16.

WALLED LAKE WESTERN 64, LAKELAND 29: In a LVC game Jan. 16, host Walled Lake Western (9-1, 5-1) rolled to the victory over White Lake Lakeland (0-10, 0-6).

Boys hockey

LAKELAND 5, SKYLINE 3: Goalie Bryce Samoylov made 37 saves and Alex Libby had a goal and two assists as White Lake Lakeland (11-5) turned back Ann Arbor Skyline (12-4) in a non-conference game Jan. 17 at Lakeland Ice Arena.

Tyler Martin, Nick Hrobsky, Ryan Ramboer and Justin Smith also tallied goals for the victorious Eagles, who outscored Skyline 3-2 in the final period. Other assists went to Hayden Baker and Jake Lesnew.

Ryan Schmunk, Katoba Nakamura and Shea O'Brien tallied one goal apiece, while Luke Lippert added two assists for Skyline. Goalie Brenden Cobb made 17 saves.

SOUTH LYON 5, WALLED LAKE WESTERN 1: Ryan Bigler had two goals and one assist, while Luke Turowski also added two goals to lead South Lyon Unified (9-3, 7-0) to a Lakes Valley Conference win Jan. 16 over the Warriors (5-8-1, 2-4-1) at the Kensington Valley Ice House in Brighton.

Brandon Heffernan also had a goal, which outscored Western 3-1 in the final period. Assists went to Jake Heffernan, Charlie Assemany, Ashton Jones and Caleb Mulcahy as South Lyon tallied three short-handed goals.

SLU goalie Andrew Lowen made 24 saves, while Western's lone goal came from Jack Brandt in the second period.

LAKELAND 3, MILFORD 2: White Lake Lakeland (10-5, 6-2) made a 3-1 first period lead hold up to defeat the rival Mavericks (8-5, 4-4) in a Lakes Valley Conference game Jan. 13 at Lakeland Ice Arena.

Alex Libby got the Eagles on the board two minutes into the game off an assist from Tyler Martin, but Milford's Jack Chaldecott tied it with his second of the year from Nathan Brennan.

Blake Jackson (from Ben Getzen and Ryan Stichler) and Nick Hrobsky (from Blake Jackson and Ryan Ramboer) answered for Lakeland before the period to give Lakeland a two goal cushion.

Sam Hewitt's power play goal from Brent Anderson and Mitchell Balaka at the eight-minute mark pulled Milford to within one but the Mavs couldn't score the qualifier against Lakeland goalie Bryce Samoylov (17 saves).

Milford goalie Hunter Bartholomew made 27 saves.

SOUTH LYON 6, TRI-VALLEY 3: On Jan. 13, Ryan Bigler had two goals and one assist, while Luke Turowski added a goal and three assists as South Lyon Unified (8-3) overcame a 3-2 second period deficit with four unanswered goals in the final period to beat the host Tri-Valley Titans (4-7) in Midland.

Brian Plohetski and Ashton Jones each chipped in with a goal and assist, while Jake Heffernan had the other goal for SLU. Other assists went to Jace Gerlach and Adam Zebley.

Goalie Nolan Smith made 10 saves in the victory for SLU.

Tri-Valley, outshot 33-13, got a goal and assist from Matthew Summerfield, while Colt Van Wormer and Brock Leinberger also chipped in with goals.

MILFORD 3, STONEY CREEK 0: Goalie Hunter Bartholomew made 39 saves to record the shutout on Jan. 12 as the Mavericks (8-5) won their fifth straight with a non-conference win over host Rochester Stoney Creek (8-4) at the Onyx.

Ben Kozar had a goal and assist, while Kaz Bowring and Tyler Conklin also tallied goals for the Mavs, all coming in the second period. Other assists went to Sam Hewitt, Jack Chaldecott, Jacob Quinn and Brent Anderson.

Boys swimming

WALLED LAKE WESTERN 96, LAKELAND 80: White Lake Lakeland senior captain Jack Winslow captured the 50-yard freestyle and 100 butterfly in a Lakes Valley Conference setback Jan. 18 at home against the Warriors.

Winslow also teamed up with Peyton Triplette, Jacob Hazelton and Parker Crutchman for a first in the 200 freestyle relay. Other firsts came from sophomore Austin Kolb, who posted a personal best 205.85 points in the 1-meter diving, along with Crutchman in the 100 freestyle. Freshman Luke Dittman placed third in diving.

LAKELAND INVITATIONAL: On Jan. 13, Howell scored a team-best 782 points to earn the title with Pinckney (509), Milford (497) and host White Lake Lakeland (331) rounding out the top four.

Jack Winslow led Lakeland with a first on the 100-yard freestyle (49.67) and a second in the 50 freestyle to qualify for both the Oakland County and MISCA meet. He also teamed up with Jacob Hazelton, Jason Tanner and Parker Crutchman for a third in the 200 freestyle relay with MISCA qualifying time.

Other top finishers for Lakeland included Austin Kolb (1-meter diving) and Jacob Hazelton (200 individual medley), second; Hazelton, 100 breaststroke (third); Luke Dittman, diving (third); Crutchman, 200 freestyle (third); Tanner, 100 butterfly (fourth); Tanner, 100 breaststroke (fifth).

In the 100 backstroke, Jonah Walker and Peyton Triplette achieved personal bests.

Girls skiing

MT. BRIGHTON (GIANT SLALOM): Brighton (23 points) took first overall Jan. 18 in the Mt. Brighton H.S. Ski League giant slalom even with Birmingham (30), South Lyon United (40), Northville (781) and Saline-Chelsea rounding out the top five.

Top finishers for South Lyon included Natalie Aulicino, third (33.47); Trinity Glover, 10th (35.87); Leslie OConnor, 13th (36.13); and Gracie Sigouin, 14th (36.70).

LAKELAND SWEEPS: On Jan. 16-17, Katie White was first overall in both the slalom and giant slalom events as White Lake Lakeland (4-0) swept both Milford, 36-40, Bloomfield Hills Sacred Heart-Livonia Ladywood, 33-40, in a Southeast Michigan Ski League Alpine Valley Division meet.

Other slalom scorers for Lakeland against Milford included Brooke White (fourth), Olivia Racine (fifth) and Sarah Armstrong (sixth). Against Sacred Heart-Ladywood, top finishers for the Eagles included Brooke White (third), Racine (sixth) and Armstrong (seventh).

In the giant slalom, top Lakeland scorers included Brooke White (fifth), Armstrong (sixth) and Racine (eight) against Milford. Brooke White (third), Armstrong (fifth) and Racine (seventh) placed against Sacred Heart-Ladywood.

Boys skiing

MT. BRIGHTON (GIANT SLALOM): On Jan. 18, Brighton (18 points) took first-place team honors in the giant slalom event with South Lyon United (38), University of Detroit Jesuit (60), Northville (74) and Novi Detroit Catholic Central (79.5) rounding out the top five.

South Lyon's Brendan Clancy was first overall in 32.00 second followed by teammates Evan Leslie (sixth, 32.76), Hunter Williams (11th, 34.01) and Ryan Francis (20th, 34.96).

LAKELAND WINS TWICE: In a Southeast Michigan Ski League Alpine Division meet Jan. 16-17, White Lake Lakeland (4-0) defeated rival Milford, 29-49, and Orchard Lake St. Mary Prep, 24-58.

In the slalom, James Wenzloff, Tommy McCarthy  and Drew Massey swept the first three places, while Zach Massey was eighth against both Milford and St. Mary Prep.

In the giant slalom, top Lakeland finishers against Milford included Wenzloff (second), Drew Massey (third), Dillon Massey (fourth) and McCarthy (sixth).

Wenzloff, Drew and Dillon Massey and McCarthy swept the first four places against St. Mary Prep.

Girls gymnastics

CARUSS INVITATIONAL: The annual Jeanne Caruss Memorial Invitational, hosted by Huron Valley United and featuring 21 of the state's top teams representing 39 different schools, will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 27 with team march and introductions at White Lake Lakeland High School.

The invitational is in memory of the gymnastics judge who passed away in 2012 of pancreatic cancer. Caruss was known for her keen eye and reputation of fairness among gymnasts, coaches, parents and fellow judges.

LINDEN TRI-MEET: On Jan. 15, Tecumseh (136.00) defeated Huron Valley United (133.00) in at three-team meet Jan. 15 at Linden.

Freshman Laura Nowicki (Milford) was Huron Valley's top performer with scores of 8.9 (floor exercise), 8.5 (balance beam), 8.25 (vault) and 7.95 (uneven bars). Freshman Rylee Parton (Lakeland) added an 8.625 on floor.

Girls bowling

LAKELAND 28, WALLED LAKE NORTHERN 2: Jenny Pelc (202-244) and Taylor McMBride (225-207) led the way as White Lake Lakeland (7-1, 7-1) rolled to the Lakes Valley Conference victory over the rival Knights on Jan. 17 at Waterford's Airway Lanes. 

Erica Pyden also added a 166 for the Lakeland in the Bogie Lake Road battle.

LAKELAND 30, WALLED LAKE WESTERN 0: On Jan. 16, Taylor McBride scored a 202-211 two-game set as White Lake Lakeland (6-1, 6-1) shut out the Warriors in a LVC match at Century Bowl in Waterford.

LAKELAND 18, WALLED LAKE NORTHERN 12: On Jan. 17, Aaron Lenz posted a high game of 212 as White Lake Lakeland (4-4, 4-4) took the Bogie Lake Road battle over the rival Knights in a LVC match at Waterford's Airway Lanes.

Other top scorers for the Eagles included Jon Barnes (192-178), Erik Haney (176) and Michael Curtis (175).

LAKELAND 28, WALLED LAKE WESTERN 2: Aaron Lenz posted single game scores of 174-213 as White Lake Lakeland (3-4, 3-4) defeated the Warriors in an LVC match Jan. 16 at Waterford's Century Bowl.

Jon Barnes (202), Nick Kotsonas (180) and Erik Haney (172) also contributed to the victory for Lakeland.
