A Rohingya man has been gunned down in an attack ‘by a group of refugees’ at a camp in Cox’s Bazar, police say.
They have detained a refugee in connection with a separate attack at another camp in the southern district.
Ukhia Police Station OC Md Abul Khayer, citing witnesses, said Md Yusuf, 43, of Ghona refugee camp in Palongkhali was shot and injured in the attack by ‘five to six other Rohingya people’ around 10pm on Friday.
The attackers had fled before the police arrived, the OC said.
Yusuf was admitted to the Red Crescent hospital at the camp in a critical condition, but succumbed to his injuries around midnight, the police officer said.
During the attack at Balukhali camp, the refugees caught one of the attackers and beat him up before handing him over to the police.
“Police rescued and admitted him to hospital,” the OC said and identified the detained attacker as Mohammad Alam, 24.
Khayer also said police were trying to arrest those involved with the two attacks.
