A 32-year-old woman and her 23-year-old accomplice have been arrested in connection with several snatchings across the Capital, the police said on Friday. They said the woman concealed her identity by dressing up differently each time.
Nilothi Extension resident Ramnik Singh and the Nangloi resident were arrested on Wednesday, said Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Vijay Kumar. The police claim to have solved nine cases of snatching with these arrests.
A woman approached the Kirti Nagar police station saying that two persons on a bike had snatched her purse. Review of CCTV footage of the snatching revealed that the accused were on a sports bike and that the pillion rider was a woman dressed in a man’s clothes. She was wearing a hoodie and sunglasses to conceal her identity.
Mr. Singh was arrested with help of human surveillance. “Search of his residence led to the recovery of a countrymade pistol and two live cartridges,” said Mr. Kumar.
Following interrogation, Mr. Singh revealed information about his associate. She was arrested the same day with help of technical surveillance.
“The accused snatched phones, bags and jewellery from pedestrians in Kirti Nagar and nearby areas. They would throw cheap phones and bags in the drain and keep the expensive ones,” Mr. Kumar said.
He added that the police have recovered several pieces of jewellery, ₹78,000, two mobile phones, a bike and the clothes used by the accused to to conceal their identity. Mr. Kumar said the woman’s husband is in jail on charges of murder.
