STAMFORD — The Trinity Catholic High School girls basketball team exploded for 51 points in the second half on its way to a 75-55 home triumph over city-rival Westhill High on Friday night at Walsh Court.

Trinity Catholic (6-6, 5-4 FCIAC) used a 13-2 surge to build a 47-38 edge after three quarters. The Crusaders made 17 of 27 free throws in the second half after being in the bonus for the final 11 minutes of action.

“We decided to wake up in the second half. We didn’t play to our potential in the first half,” said Trinity Catholic coach Mike Martino. “Even with all we did in the second half, I consider this a sub-par performance for our side.”

CRUSADERS HAVE ATHLETICISM

Trinity Catholic overcame a 27-24 halftime deficit thanks to its pressure defense forcing a number of turnovers. The Crusaders’ height edge led to an advantage on the backboards as well. The rebounds led to runouts and fastbreak baskets for Trinity Catholic.

I’yanna Lops, who left Westhill to join Trinity Catholic this season, finished with a game-high 26 points. The center scored in the paint, at the foul line (6 of 10) along with a pair of 3-pointers.

“I’yanna is embracing the idea of scoring more in the paint,” Martino said. “But she is a multi-dimensional, multi-threat player.”

Meanwhile, sophomore Caitlyn Scott is embracing her job as point guard for the Crusaders.

Scott scored 16 of her 18 points in the second half. But she displayed a pass-first mentality for much of the evening. Her aggressiveness also helps on the Trinity press, which has the 6-foot-0 Lops disrupting the in-bounder.

“Caitlyn has grown into a point guard as the season has evolved,” Martino said. “She has a lot of court vision and her passes are spot on.”

Trinity Catholic’s lone senior, Molly Murray, had 11 of her 13 points in the first half.

Kiera Fenske scored six points off the bench in the second half.

The Crusaders also welcome the addition of Kyah Nowlin (eight of her 10 points in the second half) at guard. Nowlin, who formerly played at Westhill, has finished sitting out the opening 10 games due to the transfer rule.

POSITIVES FOR WESTHILL

Westhill stayed in the contest until falling into the bonus situation during Trinity’s 13-2 third-quarter surge.

Westhill guard Maddy Bautista had 15 of her team-high 20 points in the first half.

Grace Hansen (eight points before fouling out in 4th quarter) and Samantha Johns-Folkes (nine points in the paint) were other standouts for the Vikings.

“Our kids did well to hang with a team like Trinity Catholic into the third period,” Westhill coach Katherine Begetis said. “There were moments Trinity took the wind out of our sails. I saw a lot of positives from our starters as well as some youngsters off the bench. I’m seeing our players’ confidence grow. I couldn’t ask for more than Maddy Bautista gave us.”
